About me

My name is Jacco Kamp (February 12, 1999) and I come from Breda. I am currently living in Amsterdam and I am studying the 4 year music and technology (composition & sound design) course at the HKU.

From an early age I have been very busy making and listening to music within a wide range of movements and genres. Around 2019 I started experimenting within the digital field of making music. I've always played piano and drums/percussion and I've kept myself busy DJing and organizing dance events.

Portfolio (music & projects)

Southern Borders

This composition is based on the book 'Spectro Morphology' by Dennis Smalley. In this book, the reader can discover different techniques and theories about composing and listening to music and sounds. I have used various topics from this book such as: centrifurgence and centripetence, vortex, exogeny and endogeny.

These topics are mainly about how sounds, layers and other musical gestures can move through space and time.

Hangwerk

Hangwerk is a spatial interactive project that I made together with 3 fellow students/friends. My biggest contribution is in the composition and sound design (real-time processing by means of 2 microphones). Below you can read more about the technique and the concept.

Hangwerk is a spatially interactive installation that simulates nature and life (audiovisual) in inanimate matter. The installation is a non-linear experience focused on the mysticism of a non-existent organism. Spectators of the work are part of a musical composition and find themselves in a dream world where the senses are continuously stimulated.

The installation consists of several gold glitter curtains that are attached in height to trusses. These curtains are set in motion by means of automated motors and fans, enhanced with fog machines and alternating lights. Between these curtains are hidden microphones that transmit the sound of the curtains and spectators to a computer outside the installation. Within this computer, the audio is processed in parallel with nature-inspired processing. In combination with various musical layers, the audio is transmitted and spatialized in real time over 8 speakers. This ensures that the viewer hears himself and the rustle of the curtains, spatially and in real time.

Humanity is moving further and further away from nature through technology and development. This creates a certain disintegration and dissolution of our nature. Our environment, interests, activities and work activities are increasingly taking place in an abstract and 'lifeless' world. This abstract and 'lifeless' world started with materials and life from nature.

With ''Hangwerk'' we start from inanimate matter and meaningless sound to a mystical, imaginative world full of inspiration from nature. We integrate and transform audiovisual features of life and nature with meaningless matter and audio into a large hanging, freely interpretable organism.

Noise to Note

This composition was also made in response to Dennis Smalley's book 'Spectro Morphology'. During the process I focused on sounds that transform over time. Dennis Smalley refers to these transformations as "pitch-effluvium continuum".

The composition starts with noise which 'mutates' to textured noise, node(s), inharmonic spectrum, harmonic spectrum and finally to notes (12-equal temperament).

Stellar

'Stellar' is an improvisation that I made together with 2 friends. We use an acoustic piano, modular synthesizer, Juno synthesizer and various analog effects. In addition, we record the piano with two microphones. We combine the signal of this with a 'microcosm'.

Acousmatic

This composition is inspired by 'acousmatic music'. Acousmatic music is a branch of the genre 'electroacoustic music'. The entire composition consists of field recordings of sounds within my house and an improvisation on an acoustic piano. The processing, layout and placement of the sounds are inspired by Boris Billier (Aries Mond).

Live-performance in de Nijverheid (Utrecht)

This video shows a live performance and improvisation by 3 fellow students and me. In this performance we combine acoustic instruments with electronic instruments and processing. Four percussion instruments (gourd, cymbal, chimes and darbuka) are played by me and recorded with 2 microphones. The audio is amplified directly from a mixer on speakers, but also forwarded to the electronic instrumentation and processing. Here we resample, chop, pitch, delay and sequence the audio in real-time. Every performance with this setup has a different result.

Unfortunately, due to a recording error, the audio was recorded in mono.

Day on Earth

In this composition I have tried to translate a day on earth into music. I thought chronologically about a day and conceptually incorporated this into the music.

De 12-toons techniek

For this composition I used the '12-tone technique'. This technique was invented in the 1950s and treats every note in the chromatic scale as equal. By using different combinations of intervals, the composer can sound all 12 notes before the first note used sounds again. I mainly used a 'minor second' interval and a 'quarter' interval.

Nooit van Gehoord (NvG)

Musical compilation made with a fellow student. The compilation contains some tracks made by me. These are combined with music and visual work by Misha Douglas Maclaren.

Mistral’s Diary

This is an atmospheric house track that I made a while back. In the opening of the song a noise can be heard that transforms into bird sounds. Through filtering and other processing elements, the noise changes over time to filtered noise, creating the illusion of bird sounds. The percussion contains many polymetric elements created with a Euclidean sequencer. The rest of the track is filled with various VST synthesizers.
